STRI Group is a global design, engineering and management consultancy and all services are underpinned by scientific research. Our skills were founded within the design, management and maintenance of sports surfaces, and we continue to deliver and implement strategies for sports facilities and their surrounding infrastructure, as well as working within residential, corporate and commercial spaces.
STRI has been delivering bespoke research and development solutions on an 8-hectare site in Yorkshire since its inception in 1929. The latest innovations in turf-related technologies continue to be imagined, tested and developed on site as we strive to continually improve playability and sustainability of natural sports and amenity surfaces.
We are looking for a talented individual to join the UK grounds team, based in Bingley, West Yorkshire.
The successful candidate will form an integral part of our grounds team, maintaining our trials ground to the highest standard. This team is responsible for constructing and maintaining our trials areas to meet the needs and specifications of the research work being conducted. This covers a wide range of different constructions and maintenance regimes, including football, tennis and golf areas.
STRI runs a wide variety of research trials, product tests and machinery testing for a broad selection of clients ranging from governing bodies of sport to various commercial entities. With a variety of changes and challenges being presented to the industry, this is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of research and innovative solutions .
This is a unique and varied role which would suit someone wanting to further develop their career or someone who would like to begin their career and learn a variety of different maintenance practices. Working hours are predominantly Mon-Fri 8:15 – 16:00. Full training will be provided.
The role will include:
- Carrying out area preparation, grass establishment and turf maintenance.
- Regular renovations of trials areas, including but not limited to; resurfacing , scarifying, dressing and seeing of areas.
- Maintenance of turf areas using all relevant machinery.
- Liaise with head grounds-person to develop and enact weekly plans to ensure high level delivery of all bespoke areas.
- Assisting and planning construction of new areas in line with research requirements for specific areas.
- Responsibility for adhering to health and safety requirements through PUWER, risk assessments and maintenance of equipment and infrastructure systems, ensuring these procedures are carried out by the team too .
- Assist head grounds-person with all administrative responsibilities in line with legal and trial requirements.
- Assist with training and development of junior team members
- Carry out, under the supervision of the Head Grounds-person, works associated with upkeep of non-turf areas and buildings.
A successful candidate must have:
- PA1 & PA6 qualifications
- A good understanding of sports turf maintenance; ideally 3-5 years experience
- A willingness to learn and adapt to new ideas and ways of working.
- Good communication and organisational skills with the ability to work as part of a team and to produce high level standards of sports turf.
- Basic computer skills
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable but not essential:
- PA2
- An interest in sustainability and the environment
- NVQ qualifications in sports turf maintenance or equivalent.
