Bothwell Castle Golf Club was established in 1922 and is a private members club, which allows a limited number of visitors. Mr Adam originally undertook the course design, but over the years the course layout has changed although it remains a parkland, treelined course. It is a busy course with a thriving membership and a substantial waiting list. The role of Head Greenkeeper is a key role within our organisation and through leading our Greenkeeping team you will ensure that the standards of the Golf Course are maintained at all times.
Job brief
The Head Greenkeeper is responsible for the management, care and presentation of the course, reflecting the expectations of members. The postholder is responsible for ensuring that the course offers a consistent challenge and an enjoyable experience for golfers of all standards. You will be required to have a detailed knowledge of agronomy, plant pathology, entomology and chemistry. Knowledge of soil science is also desirable. You will lead a team of up to 9 staff; this is a mixture of qualified greenkeepers, greenkeeping apprentice’s and seasonal staff. Our full-time Greenkeepers work an annualised hours system to reflect seasonal demands. You will co-ordinate, organise and control all works on the golf course on a daily basis including but not limited to daily staffing tasks, use of and ordering appropriate machinery and materials. You will be responsible for identifying any training and development needs of your team and provide regular coaching and mentoring to ensure the continuous development of your team and the golf course. A mature and confident approach and attention to detail is essential.
Key responsibilities
  • Grounds maintenance, overseeing all aspects of turf care, including mowing, fertilisation and pest control
  • Manage the maintenance of bunkers, greens, tees, fairways, rough and paths to ensure that they are in optimal condition for play
  • Implement effective irrigation systems and water management practices to conserve resources and maintain healthy turf
  • Monitor and address turf diseases, weeds, pest and other issues which may affect playing surfaces
  • Maintain and install drainage
  • Assist in the ongoing project to renovate all bunkers on the course and other future course development projects
Staff Management and Training
  • Lead and manage the greenkeeping team providing guidance, training and supervision
  • Have strong organisational skills with ability to prioritise workload and meet strict deadlines
  • Assist with recruitment, training and annual appraisals of the team
  • Keep personal skills up to date through a programme of professional development
  • Attend and participate in regular Greens Sub-Committee and Management meetings
  • Ensure that a culture of safety, professionalism and teamwork applies to staff
  • Ensure all members of the team who are operating machinery, tools and equipment do so following all safe systems of work and associated procedures
  • Ensure all Health & Safety Assessments are up to date and are reviewed as per required standards
  • Create and maintain effective working relationships with all Club staff, members, visitors and the Main Committee and Sub-committees
Budgeting and Resource Management
  • In conjunction with the Accounts & Membership Secretary, formulate and manage the departmental budget
  • Keep accurate records of expenditure, asset inventory and equipment maintenance
  • Utilise staff in a cost effective and efficient manner
  • Assist in the decision making process at the machinery lease renewal
Course Development Projects
  • Work with Golf Club Management to plan and execute course renovations and construction projects
  • Monitor the progress of projects to ensure that they are completed on time and within budget
  • Review the course policy document and recommend amendments where appropriate
Course Equipment
  • The core of our machinery is modern John Deere, under an operating Lease and maintenance package. We also have a number of other machines we own outright. An extensive knowledge of maintenance of this machinery is an important part of this role
Essential Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience in a management role, either deputy or head greenkeeper
  • Minimum SVQ3/SCQF5 in greenkeeping or sports turf maintenance
  • PA1, PA2A,PA6A spraying certificates
  • Sound knowledge of modern greenkeeping machinery maintenance and irrigation systems
  • Experience in installing and maintenance of land drainage systems
  • Good knowledge of, or interest in, golf and the rules of golf
  • Computer literate, in particular the ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel
Renumeration
  • Indicative salary range of £45k to £50k depending on experience, qualifications and presentation at interview
  • You will be entitled to join the company pension scheme
